Restoration and renovation were required for Saints Peter and Paul’s Old Cathedral, a heritage-listed building completed in 1890, located in Goulburn, NSW.

Project Strategies Australia engaged i2C to document the complex existing conditions and provide assistance with the restoration and renovation process. The objective of these works was to bring the cathedral up to AS1428.1 compliance and enhance its accessibility and functionality.

As part of the restoration works, consideration had to be taken when choosing finishes and a colour palette that was compliant with the heritage-approved schemes.

Notable enhancements included the installation of external crypt access and a narthex with glass ceilings. The restoration work also included standout features such as the Zeitler stained glass airlock and a new baptism area created through the repurposing of existing fixtures. To ensure the cathedral was restored to its former glory while meeting modern-day requirements, general painting and layout modifications were also undertaken.

The works were completed in time for the cathedral’s 150th anniversary and have significantly enhanced its accessibility and functionality, making it more enjoyable for future generations.
