The Goods Shed Mixed-Use Development
The Goods Shed, Ballarat redevelopment is an exercise in restoring the heritage-listed goods shed building and surrounding plazas into a vibrant activity space that balances the charms of yesteryear with the expectations of today and tomorrow.
The spaces include a 300 seat theatrette, ballroom and event space, partnered with a dining precinct encompassing a distillery, restaurants and cafe. These were supplemented with a completely new external events space and public plaza to be used for markets, displays, civil activities, performances and general community use.
The Goods Shed redevelopment precinct consists of a 77 room Quest apartment hotel, 500+ multi-deck carpark, a bus interchange, events hall, 1200m2 retail development and a landscaped community outdoor plaza.
i2C have been engaged by Pellicano Group to design (architecture, interiors and wayfinding) the redevelopment of the historic The Goods Shed and precinct into a performing arts, events, dining and community centre.
Under strict heritage controls, the existing bluestone and hardwood timber building have been beautifully restored to their former glory. Where practical, existing materials and features have been retained. Where necessary, recycled timbers, bluestone and other complementary materials were sought to enhance the heritage aspect. With the completion of the heritage stage of the building, the fit-out for the use spaces has been directed to enhance, complement and celebrate the building they reside in. To cap off the development, artwork has been commissioned that utilises railways tracks and old paraphernalia salvaged from the original building displayed throughout with historical markers and information boards provided to keep the precinct’s heritage alive for future generations.
