The centre, although a bit tired and home to a couple of design challenges, held so much potential. Immediately inspired by the local surroundings and context we set about the redesign of the amenities. Maroubra Pacific Square sits in Sydney’s eastern suburbs with its own beautiful beachfront which locals love to surf, run along or laze on a sunny Saturday afternoon. We knew we needed to celebrate this and use it to enhance the customer experience as well as creating a sense of place within the design. Using our client’s style guidelines, we created the base palette to tie the centre in with Charter Hall’s portfolio. Whilst focussing on customising the features and focal points of the design to allow the amenities to stand out from the rest.

Challenges

Focusing on i2C’s “Why” of inspiring ideas to enhance the human experience, our first challenge lay in the planning of the amenities. Both clumsy and difficult to manoeuvre, we completely restructured the layouts to form easy to use spaces for not only the customer but cleaner’s alike. Next, we moved onto the entries, knowing that the needed to set the tone and celebrate our design intent. We approached an artist to use his aerial imagery of local highlights as the main feature walls and signage to the new amenities. These feature entry walls not only enhance the sense of arrival to the amenities but also creates a sense of place. With the beach and short line as our inspiration, our palette features ocean colouring paired with natural teak and woody greys. This takes form inside the amenities where the customer can discover teal and aquamarine mosaic tiling to mirrored walls, solid sublime teak partition walls and natural greys with sleek white moulded benchtops.
